Water Filters Auckland — Tested for NZ Tap Water
What's actually in your Auckland tap water
Watercare supplies around 1.7 million Aucklanders from a mix of dam, river and groundwater sources, treated at plants including Ardmore, Waitakere, Huia, Onehunga and Tuakau. By the time it reaches your tap, your water has had several things added to it — all legal under the Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand, but not everything you'd choose to drink.
Chlorine
Added at every Watercare treatment plant. Used to kill bacteria like E. coli and campylobacter, and dosed at a level that maintains a residual all the way to your tap. It does its job — but it's also what gives Auckland water that pool-like smell, dries out skin, and strips colour-treated hair.

Fluoride
Added across metropolitan Auckland at 0.7–1.0 mg/L under the Fluoridation of Drinking Water Amendment Act 2021. Onehunga began fluoridation in 2024; the Waiuku plants are scheduled to follow by 30 June 2026. Standard carbon filters and jug filters don't remove fluoride — only reverse osmosis does it properly.
Removed by: RO Mineral+ (95%+ removal, NSF 58 certified)
Hardness & scale minerals
Auckland sits in the "soft to moderately hard" range depending on whether your supply is surface or groundwater. Soft enough that scale isn't dramatic — but hard enough that you'll see it build up on shower glass, kettles and hot water cylinders over time.
Reduced by: Whole house systems, NaturaWai shower filter
Aging pipe sediment
Auckland's pipe network includes infrastructure dating back decades. Even when water leaves the plant clean, it can pick up sediment, rust and trace metals on the journey to your tap — particularly in older suburbs and after mains work in your street.
Removed by: All Hydrate under-sink and whole-house systems

Auckland water filter FAQs
Is Auckland tap water safe to drink? +
Yes — Watercare's supply meets the Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand. "Safe" and "what you'd choose to drink" aren't the same thing, though. Chlorine is added everywhere, fluoride is added across metro Auckland, and the water travels through pipework that's decades old in many suburbs. A filter handles the gap between "safe" and "actually good."
Which Auckland suburbs have fluoridated water? +
All of metropolitan Auckland is fluoridated. Onehunga began fluoridation in 2024 after a Director-General of Health directive. Waiuku's three treatment plants are scheduled to begin fluoridation by 30 June 2026. The non-metropolitan supplies at Bombay, Huia Village, Wellsford, Warkworth, Snells-Algies, Helensville and Muriwai are not currently fluoridated. Use our Know Your Water tool for your specific address.
Do I need a water softener in Auckland? +
Probably not. Auckland's water is soft to moderately hard depending on the source — well within the NZ guideline of 200 mg/L calcium carbonate. You'll see some scale on shower glass and in kettles over time, but a full softener is overkill for most Auckland homes. A shower filter and a good under-sink system covers what you actually feel day-to-day.
Can I install an under-sink filter myself in Auckland? +
You can, but we reccomend a professional. We have a network of installers across Auckland (North Shore, Central, West, East and South), and we'll connect you when you order. We ensure these installers are good and have fair pricing. Book an install here.
How fast can I get a filter in Auckland? +
Orders placed before 2pm typically ship same-day from our Christchurch warehouse. Auckland delivery is usually 2–3 business days via courier. Free shipping on NZ orders over $200.
Will my filter remove the chlorine taste straight away? +
Yes, our systems a highly effective at removing chlorine and the difference is noticeable from the first glass. It's usually the moment people decide they should have done this years ago.
