Water Filters NZ: Which One Does Your Home Actually Need?

Most New Zealand tap water is safe to drink. It is also chlorinated, often fluoridated, and in a growing number of regions carries nitrates, PFAS or hard-water minerals that no council treats for. A water filter deals with the part the council doesn't. The right one depends on three things: what's in your water, which taps you want filtered, and whether you can plumb it in.

This guide walks through the five types of water filter sold in NZ, what each removes, what it costs, and which Hydrate Filters system fits. Every system below is tested on New Zealand tap water at an IANZ-accredited lab, ships free over $200, and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Whole house On the incoming main Chlorine, sediment, scale; UV option for tank and bore water Yes $1,295
Shower & bath Shower arm or bath tap Chlorine (skin and hair) No — fits in minutes $109
Filtered bottle On the go Chlorine, taste, odour No $98

Under sink water filters

The default choice for most NZ households on town supply. A compact system in the kitchen cupboard feeds a dedicated filtered tap at the sink, so drinking and cooking water is filtered and the rest of the house is untouched. Our UFX3 Ultra Filtration uses a 0.01-micron membrane plus two carbon blocks to remove chlorine, PFAS, microplastics and bacteria while leaving beneficial minerals in. No power, no tank, no wastewater, tap included, cartridges once a year.

Best for: families on chlorinated town supply who want clean drinking water without changing the whole house.

Reverse osmosis water filters

The highest level of home filtration. Water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane that strips fluoride, nitrates, heavy metals and up to 99.9% of dissolved contaminants — the things a carbon or ultrafiltration system can't touch. The trade-off is that RO removes minerals too, which is why the RO Mineral+ adds calcium and magnesium back in a final stage. The Smart RO gives the same purification on the bench with no plumbing.

Best for: fluoridated supplies, Canterbury and Waikato nitrate zones, and anyone who wants the maximum removal available.

Whole house water filters

Installed where the water enters the house, so every tap, shower, bath and appliance runs filtered water. Town-supply systems (Eco Series, Pro-Home) remove chlorine and sediment across the home and protect cylinders and appliances from grit. For rainwater and bore supplies the Elite-Home adds UV sterilisation for bacteria and pathogens.

Best for: skin and hair sensitivity across the whole household, tank or bore water, and homes with scale problems.

Shower and bath filters

Chlorine strips natural oils from skin and hair and is the most common trigger behind dry skin and eczema flare-ups after showering. The NaturaWai Shower Filter fits any standard NZ shower arm in minutes and removes chlorine at the point of use. The bath version is made for babies and sensitive skin.

Best for: eczema, dry skin and hair, and renters who can't plumb anything in.

Water filter FAQs

Is NZ tap water safe to drink?
Yes, by the Drinking Water Standards. But "safe" means below legal limits, not free of chlorine, fluoride, nitrates or PFAS. A filter removes the things the standard allows through.

What is the best water filter for NZ?
For most homes on town supply, an under sink ultrafiltration system is the best balance of removal, cost and maintenance. If fluoride or nitrates are the concern, reverse osmosis.

Do water filters remove fluoride?
Only reverse osmosis does reliably. Carbon and ultrafiltration systems do not.

Do I need a plumber?
For under sink and whole house systems, yes — we offer fixed-rate installation nationwide. Shower filters, bottles and the benchtop Smart RO need no plumbing.

How often do cartridges need changing?
Under sink: every 6–12 months. Shower: every 3 months. Whole house: 12 months. We email you when it's due.
